According to Dr. Elaine Aron, Ph.D., about 20% of the population is highly sensitive and bearing the title of HSP is by no means an indication of a pathological condition or disorder. It means that these individuals have nervous systems that are sensitive to internal and external stimuli, process information more deeply than most, and pick up on subtleties in the environment.
This trait is essentially “a neutral trait…a survival advantage in some situations and not in others.” In other words, unless HSPs understand how to bring forth their best strengths, they may find themselves overwhelmed, chronically stressed, anxious, depressed, and burned out. Their temperament style requires self-exploration and adjustment to our Type A-driven world.
It’s important for these individuals to find balance and respect their unique needs as this is what leads HSPs to a greater sense of peace, connectedness, and purpose. Dr. Aron has focused years of research in identifying factors that effectively contribute to HSPs living a centered life.
